Update from Stratford Town Council on Waste Water Treatment Plant
In September Stratford Town Council voted to proceed with building a new enclosed Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) sewer treatment plant on the site of the existing plant. At this time, the Town's position on the long-term solution selected in September has not changed despite some recent media reports.
"We want to ensure that residents remain informed on the Town's position throughout this process," commented Mayor David Dunphy. "Council and staff feel that some information being reported in the media recently may be misleading and, because of our commitment to be a transparent government, we thought it was important to correct the record".
The Town of Stratford has not met with nor discussed the financial details of a potential agreement with the City of Charlottetown since the spring. We have not decided to "come aboard" on the Charlottetown option nor have we discussed connecting our water system to Charlottetown's system as a means to provide water resources to the City.
"The two biggest hurdles before Council remain the issues of cost and control," added Mayor Dunphy. "These have not been addressed sufficiently to date and until they are, we remain committed to building our own new plant as previously decided."
The Town of Stratford remains hopeful that discussions with the Province to address the concerns of our community will lead to a long-term solution for the treatment of Stratford's wastewater. The Town also hopes that it will be able to work with the Province in a timely manner to access funding through the Federal Clean Water and Wastewater Fund, which is contingent on a partnership between all three levels of government, and which has a deadline for the use of allocated funds to be used, in order to begin construction of the long-term solution in the Spring of 2017.
