Stratford Congratulates Councillor Diane Griffin

Today in Ottawa the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, recommended the appointment of nine independent senators. The Town of Stratford is pleased to see Councillor Diane Griffin among the appointments.

"The news today of Councillor Griffin's appointment to the Senate of Canada is tremendous for the residents of Stratford and all of PEI," commented Mayor David Dunphy. "We are thrilled for Diane and what this new experience offers her. While we will miss her experience, knowledge and progressive thinking around the Council table, we are very thankful for the time and contributions she has made to Stratford and Prince Edward Island."

Councillor Griffin is presently serving her fourth term of office on Stratford's Council. Currently, she chairs the Planning, Development and Heritage Committee and is Vice-chair of the Accountability & Engagement and Sustainability committees. As a Councillor Diane has worked with the Stratford municipal team to make the Town a more sustainable and environmental community. Diane played a leading role in Stratford's recent Cosmetic Pesticide Bylaw legislation which was a first for PEI municipalities.

Diane is also Stratford's representative on the board of the Federation of PEI Municipalities (FPEIM) where she currently serves as their Vice-President. On the FPEIM Board, Diane has chaired the Finance and Policy Committee and worked on many legislative initiatives.

"Diane's experience and knowledge from her past work and volunteer activities and her terms as a Stratford Councillor combined with her collaborative working style will serve her well in this new role," added Mayor Dunphy, "and we look forward to working with her as a senator."

For her many contributions to Prince Edward Island, Diane Griffin was inducted into the Order of PEI in 2010 and in 2013, Councillor Griffin received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from UPEI. Diane is also a Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient, and has received numerous awards including the Douglas Pimlott Award from the Canadian Nature Federation and the PEI Environment Award. Diane is also a published author, former Deputy Minister in the PEI Department of Environment and Energy and has a long history working with various nature, environmental and outdoor groups on PEI and nationally.
