FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, November 2, 2016
The Town of Stratford invites Stratford residents, family and friends to participate in honouring our Veterans at the 11th Annual Stratford Remembrance Day Ceremony to be held on Friday, November 11th beginning at 10:45 a.m. at the Stratford Town Centre.
"This service remains one of our most attended events of the year" stated Mayor David Dunphy, "which indicates the level of respect that residents have for those who put their lives on the line for our country and for the cause of freedom."
Prior to our Remembrance Day Ceremony we invite every resident to get to know some of Stratford's very own veterans by visiting our Stratford Heroes display, available for viewing from November 4 to 16 at the Stratford Town Centre or by taking notice of the bus shelters around Town. Each November, bus shelters in Stratford feature local veterans from WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and Afghanistan mission.
The banners on display in the Stratford bus shelters and at Stratford Town Centre contain the picture, name and service details of a Stratford war veteran. The Town of Stratford would like to thank the following businesses for generously donating their bus shelter advertisement space for the duration of the Stratford Heroes display: Cooke Insurance Group, Dairy Farmers of Canada, H&M Charlottetown, Jason MacKay with Century 21 Real Estate, McDonald's Restaurants, Northumberland Ferries Ltd., and Tim Horton's. The Stratford Heroes posters will remain in the bus shelters until after Remembrance Day.
Another returning highlight this year is the opportunity for children to show veterans their gratitude for the sacrifices they made in serving our country. A table will be located inside Stratford Town Centre with materials and guidance available for children to create hand-made valentines. Each year Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) invites Canadian schools, individuals and organizations to make Valentines for Vets. VAC, then distributes the valentines to Veterans in long-term care facilities across the country in time for February 14. We hope that many children will take a few minutes on this important day, Remembrance Day, to create a Valentine which will bring joy to a Canadian Veteran on Valentine's Day in 2017.
Veterans and present serving members of the Canadian Forces who wish to be on parade are asked to meet at 10:15 a.m. in the gymnasium at Stratford Town Centre. The ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m. at Stratford Town Centre, 234 Shakespeare Drive. Refreshments will be available following the ceremony and all are welcome to attend.
