Stratford Grandparents Program

To the family:

  • Get the support, friendship and wisdom of caring seniors
  • Enrich the lives of young children and families through skills sharing, knowledge, and experience

To the senior:

  • An opportunity to become an important member of a family by fulfilling the role of an older adult, mentor, or grandparent
  • Enhanced self-esteem, self confidence and well-being through giving back to your community 

Who can apply?

  • Seniors of 55 years and older (seniors can volunteer by themselves or with their spouse or partner)
  • Both parties have to be residents of Stratford
  • Families with children less than 14 years of age
  • Willingness to commit to the program for at least 1 year
  • Matches are required to meet at least 2 hours per month (more meetings are also possible at the availability of both parties)

Note: The program is great for seniors who enjoy the company of children and being part of a family. This program is not intended to be a babysitting service but rather a support system for the parents and an opportunity for inter-generational sharing of knowledge, skills and learning. Parent(s) is/are required to be present at all  interactions and meetings.

How to apply?

Seniors:

  • Fill out and submit the application form
  • Provide a criminal record check (letter to be provided by the Town of Stratford upon receipt and approval of your application)
  • Attend a group information session and meet & greet at the Town of Stratford

Families:

  • Fill out and submit the application form
  • Attend a group information session and meet & greet at the Town of Stratford

Activities or events

Below are some examples of activities that families and seniors can do together:

  • Share family occasions and explore the community together (e.g. visit the parks, attend community events together)
  • Anything as simple as sharing a story, pushing a swing at the park, etc.
  • Teach your new ‘grandchild’ a new skill (e.g. how to tie their shoelaces, how to read the clock, play chess, play an instrument, cook, etc.)
  • Provide a supportive environment to the parent(s). This may be as simple as being there to listen to their frustrations and concerns or it could include providing an occasional meal to a busy family. Matches will work out together what is needed and how/if the other party can assist.
