The following items were discussed at the regular monthly meeting of the Stratford Town Council held virtually through Zoom on Wednesday, May 13, 2020.

Presentation to Stratford Resident

Mayor Ogden made a virtual presentation to recognize Stratford resident Ryan Llewellyn who earlier this year competed at the at the IKA Culinary Olympics in Stuttgart, Germany. He was the only Islander on the Culinary Youth Team Canada which is based out of Holland College's Culinary Institute of Canada. Ryan graduated from the culinary arts program at Holland College in 2019.

Ryan and his Canadian teammates trained for 10 months perfecting their timing, delivery and presentation before competing in their two competitions. The team earned gold in both competitions, placing fourth out of 24 teams, with only four of those teams earning a double-gold. This was the first time a Canadian junior culinary team has ranked that high.

Congratulations to Ryan on this amazing accomplishment and best wishes for all of your future endeavors. Mayor Ogden will be making a future presentation to Ryan on behalf of council at a later date.

Fullerton’s Creek Conservation Park Tender Awarded

Council awarded the tender for construction of a multi-use building at Fullerton’s Creek Conservation Park to WMM Ltd. in the amount of $131,600 and to Cobequid Trail Consulting for the design and construction of a natural playground in the amount of $100,000. Funding for this project is a joint initiative of the Town with the Province of Prince Edward Island and the Government of Canada through the Investing in Canada Program (ICIP). The Town’s portion of the project is $64,720.

Pondside Park Multi-Use Court Upgrade

A single tender response was received to the Town’s tender for upgrades to the multi-use court at Pondside Park. The tender fell within the approved budget for the project and was awarded to Island Coastal in the amount of $114,085, with the Town’s portion being $60,200. The remaining amount is funded through a partnership with the Federal and Provincial governments.

Building Bylaw Amendment

Since the Town’s updated Building Bylaw, Bylaw #50, was approved, the Province of PEI has proceeded to approve the Building Code Act Regulations. With the approval of the latest version of these Regulations, a couple of conflicts with our Building Bylaw #50 required correction, the primary one being the Province’s move to adopt the 2017 National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings. Second reading and adoption of a resolution to align the bylaw was held.

Work Alone Policy

The Town of Stratford, as an employer, is committed to the health, safety, and well-being of our employees, striving to ensure that all appropriate safeguards are enacted to protect our employees who must work alone or in isolation. This policy will allow for a consistent and outlined approach moving forward.
