FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, November 8, 2021

The Town of Stratford, with funding through Veterans Affairs Canada’s Commemorative Partnership Program - Community War Memorial Funding, today officially unveiled a new addition to the Town’s cenotaph. Ten outlines of the boots now line the walkway leading to the cenotaph. These ten soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice and did not return from overseas conflicts or died at home as a result of the injuries received in those conflicts.

The project has also made the existing cenotaph fully accessible through the installation of walkway. All members of the public are now able to visit and access the site with this new walkway.

“This is intended to be a place where people can gather throughout the year,” stated Mayor Steve Ogden, “a place for remembrance and reflection. Two Interpretive Panels have also been created by the Town of Stratford Heritage Committee to tell the story of these 10 individuals, one panel each for WWI and WWII. I would like to thank the Town’s Heritage Sub-Committee members for their research on this important project.”

In the lead up to, and the days following Remembrance Day, residents, businesses and organizations who wish to lay a wreath and/or view the Honour Roll project additions, may do so. While visiting the cenotaph, individuals are reminded to practice physical distancing, including allowing those previously at the cenotaph to move aside before approaching. The Town of Stratford encourages all to pause and observe two minutes of silence at 11:00am on November 11th.
