The Safety Services and Environment Committee has been investigating street lighting to ensure that we are using the most energy efficient light fixtures, and to investigate the feasibility of switching to dark sky compliant fixtures to reduce light pollution in the night sky. We work with Maritime Electric, from whom we rent all of our street lighting fixtures, on these issues. Maritime Electric has installed a section of a few dark sky compliant fixtures on the Kinlock Road somewhere between Hillside Drive and the Keppoch Road. See if you can locate them.

We passed a new street lighting policy several years ago and will be updating the existing street lights to  meet this policy over the next few years as budgets allow  New subdivisions are lit within six months of their completion in accordance with the standard set out in the policy. Existing subdivisions will be updated to the new standard only apon request  and only if the majority of the residents in that subdivision respond positively to a street light survey  Any requests for street lighting should be submitted in writing to the attention of the Safety Services and Environment Committee.
